What's the Matter???
QUESTION: What’s the Matter? ANSWER: Everything!!
Everything is made of matter! That's right, everything around you, including invisible things like the air you breathe, is matter. Matter is anything that takes up space. Did you know that your body is made of matter too?
There are three main states of matter, which are made of tiny particles called molecules!

Gas
A gas is a state of matter that spreads out to fill any container. Gas has no shape or size of its own. Gases have no color. Gases are made of particles that are so far apart that you can hardly even see them. The air around you is made of many gases including oxygen. You can feel this gas when the wind blows. Also the helium that fills your birthday balloon is a gas. Gas helps a hot air balloon fly high into the sky!

Solid
A solid is a state of matter that does not change shape. Solids are made of particles that are packed tightly. Your pencils, scissors, books and the tables in our classroom are all examples of solids.
|
Liquid
A liquid is a state of matter that takes the shape of its container. Liquids can flow, be poured, and spilled. The particles that make up a liquid move more than those of a solid allowing them to flow like a river. Water, juice, and milk are all liquids.

What Am I? I am one thing, but I can be three different things. Sometimes I am a liquid. When I am very cold, I am a solid. If I am really hot I can turn into a gas. What am I?

Matter (website)
(Tune "Oh, Dear What Can the Matter Be?")
(Chorus)
Oh, dear, what can this mat-ter be?
Oh, dear, what can this mat-ter be?
Oh, dear, what can this mat-ter be?
Sol-id or li-quid or gas?
A sol-id has weight, takes up space,
Has a cer-tain shape.
Li-quid has weight, takes up space,
But con-forms to the ves-sel in which it is put.
So a sol-id and li-quid
Look dif-f'rent to me.
(Chorus)
Oh, dear, what can this mat-ter be?
Oh, dear, what can this mat-ter be?
Oh, dear, what can this mat-ter be?
Sol-id or li-quid or gas?
A gas is in-vis-i-ble, but we can
prove
It has weight, takes up space,
Have you seen a bal-loon filled with gas,
Where the mol-e-cules spread and they spread
In-to all of the spa-ces you see?
(Chorus)
Oh, dear, what can this mat-ter be?
Oh, dear, what can this mat-ter be?
Oh, dear, what can this mat-ter be?
Sol-id or li-quid or gas?
States of Matter Poems
What Is Matter?
(Sung to Three Blind Mice)
What is matter?
What is matter?
A solid, liquid, or gas.
A solid, liquid, or gas.
It takes up space and weighs something, too.
It's everywhere--that includes me and you.
Did you ever think such a thing could be true?
That is matter.
That is matter.
Solids
A solid is a solid,
It doesn't change its shape.
It cannot move around,
It stays in just one place.
Your desk is a solid,
And so is your chair.
Just look in your classroom--
Wow! They're everywhere!
Liquids
A liquid moves smoothly.
We say that it flows.
From one place to another--
How quickly it goes!
We know that most liquids
Are easy to see.
With no shape of their own,
They're not like you and me.
Gases
Air is a gas.
We can't see it, that's true;
But often we feel it
In things that we do.
It keeps up a kite.
Air fills up a bubble.
Without it to breathe,
We would be in BIG trouble!
What's the Matter?
by Tom McGowen
What's the matter, do you ask?
I'll tell you right away.
It's everything around you,
As you work or sleep, or play.
A chair is matter, a table, too,
And so is a rock or tree.
A cloud, a star, a blade of grass,
A raindrop, a bumblebee.
The earth is matter, so is the sea,
And the sky is matter, too.
(Of course what matters most of all
Is the matter that is you!)
There's matter almost everywhere,
Except in one special place--
The vast, black, lonely emptiness,
That we call outer space.
